Arcane trolls are larger and mightier than trolls commonly found in more mundane parts of the world. These trolls are as malicious and unfearing as common trolls and share their keen senses, but have magical abilities in addition to their claws and bite.

Like common trolls, an arcane troll will begin to regenerate 5 hit points per round 3 melee rounds after taking damage. Severed members of the arcane troll’s body can also continue to fight, clawing and biting, and a completely dismembered arcane troll will also reform in 3-18 melee rounds. In like fashion to common trolls, an arcane troll can be prevented from regenerating with fire or acid.

Arcane trolls are much more intelligent than common trolls and are prone to employ traps. They are also capable of magic: darkness 15′ radius, invisibility, light, shield, and shocking grasp (as a level 8 magic-user). Once per day they can also cast blink, haste, and lightning bolt and once per week can cast explosive runes, which they use to secure their own lairs against other trolls and intruders.

Working on a world and I want to make monsters for it, but so far the only thing that calls out to me is that mutant variants of trolls emerged in places where catastrophic fallout prevented less resilient beings from surviving at all.
