Haven: Return in Force

On September 28th, Year 5 of Haven, with Rowan spooked from his near death experience and Rovert angry at the loss of another skeletal wolf, Rovert and Mark recruit a couple other adventurers to return to Shiveris’ tomb.

  • Rovert (TrS): Level 12 Human Necromancer
    • Drej, Level 5 Psuedodragon Familiar
    • Zengiff, Talking Rock
  • Conan (MiM): Level 8 Vampire Elf Magic-user (Fire and Wind)
    • Scar, Level 6 Hawk Familiar
  • Mark (JaH): Level 4 Halfling Thief
  • Stephen (EnS): Level 3 Human Thief
    • Animus, Level 1 Hawk Animal Companion

With the entry level cleared already, they make their way to the shaft and see that the few remaining giant spiders have only re-webbed a little below that level. They ignore them, teleporting directly to the top level and through the doors when Drej sees no danger on the other side with Rovert’s stone-piercing sight spell.

They search the level in peace for a while, finding a pair of flame trap statues that they leave alone. They come across some locked rooms: one full of the cold brown mold with a door on the far side, one with two massive bowls of what looks like water but they don’t dare touch, and one with baskets of moldy grain. They lock the brown mold room again and cross to the south side of the level.

Conan (very perceptive) hears shuffling ahead and they all wait a while for battle, but 10 minutes later decide to proceed. They eventually find a closed door the mummy is behind, but the light Rovert creates to let Drej see it through the door alerts it. They also see three wights in an adjoining room. While they quickly plan, one of the fairies that sometimes follows them arrives (played by my daughters) and opens the door for them, the battle begins!

Conan immediately unleashes a pair of mighty fire gouts, which the mummy is vulnerable to, and it goes down in flames! They are surprised at the sudden victory, but soon the wights close on Rovert in the doorway. One drains a level from him and is teleported out of sight by his Rebuffing Robe making room for another to approach and drain a second level, enraging Rovert that Conan and Mark are standing too close for him to escape.

Mark looses an arrow into one and breaks away to make room and Rovert unleashes a pair of swift fireballs in the room, burning himself, Conan, and Stephen, but also destroying the two remaining wights. With the room seemingly clear, they enter and find a painting depicting a comet and celebrating lizardfolk in a golden frame. While they look at it, Conan hears more shuffling and while he and Rovert go and quickly deal with an approaching Dead Lord (with the help of a fairy friend) Mark looks behind the painting to find a mummified appendage of some kind. When Conan returns, he identifies it as a finger, though 2 1/2 feet long, too large for any kind of giants they have encountered, though Rovert believes the schek gods the goblin told them about might be of sufficient size.

Through the door Dead lord emerged from, they find the mummy’s empty sarcophagus and loot a little more treasure, going back and looting the mummy itself of jewelry and taking the life-extending robe from the Dead Lord. The decide to make camp in the sarcophagus room, since they are all getting tired and estimate that it is getting late outside and Rovert needs to recover spell points and his lost levels.

During the night, Mark tries to rob Rovert’s pack (he is suspicious Rovert hid something taken off the mummy, which he did) but finds it magically trapped. It nearly kills him when it goes off (2 points off death, lucky the spell rolled low) and Stephen awakes for the last watch to find him stable but in a bad way. He drags him away to another room, but can’t revive him. When he is sure Mark will live, he returns to the sarcophagus room where he is when the others awake. Conan wants to know where Mark is, but Rovert immediately knows what happened, asking where he is so he can heal him.

Though Rovert explains that Mark was damaged trying to rob him by an innocent trap and only demands further justice at the hands of Matthias, Stephen becomes suspicious and he and Mark chat in Thieve’s Cant while Rovert and Conan lead the search of the rest of the level, finding a magical chest that when touched teleported back and forth between trapped locations. In it is a floating carpet with river of death crossing symbolism.

They return to the brown mold room and after some fire mishaps that cause it to grow manage to clear it all out and reach a treasure room with some valuables. On their way out of the tomb, they slay one spider that has made a web higher up and fireball the webs below. Back in Citadel, with Matthias refusing to adjudicate inter-adventurer conflicts, they deny Mark most of his shares in the loot and warn him against future crimes.

We’ve had inter-party fights in the past, but nothing so nearly deadly. I’m not sure how I would have felt about that kind of death. Maybe we’d have retconned it to be a non-lethal spell.
