Haven: Pit of Death

On September 21st, Year 5 of Haven, with Verdis not able to accompany him to Ovomoda’s castle to use the teleportation circle he found there, Rovert gathers what adventurers he can and goes in search of one of the tombs mentioned in the Schek Garim song.

  • Rovert (TrS): Level 11 Human Necromancer
    • Drej, Level 5 Psuedodragon Familiar
    • Elf Eater Skeleton (Level 5)
    • Zengiff, Talking Rock
  • Rowan (MiM): Level 4 Elf Magic-user (Life and Death)
  • Mark (JaH): Level 3 Halfling Thief

In the past they had only investigated one of them: Sinsith’s tomb, but Rovert recalls that the Satyrs were said to have witnessed the building of Shiveris’ tomb. They set out toward the nearest Satyr village by way of the old elven keep. On the way through the woods, they meet four satyrs on their way who know of where the tomb might be found, though none of them have been their personally. Content to search a little in the indicated area, they head toward the lake and search around the hills near it. Near dark, they find the open passage down into the tomb and make camp nearby.

During Mark’s watch, a troll, 12 feet tall, emerges from the tomb. Mark quickly wakes the others and they attack, slaying the troll pretty easily. Rovert desires to animate it, but it isn’t truly dead until they have reduced it too far to animate it. Not expecting any more trolls, they return to bed.

In the morning, they enter the tomb, finding many of the statues removed from alcoves along the way, they take a magical sword from one seemingly designed for fighting undead. They eventually find the troll’s horde, including a shield and spear meant for fighting the undead and the missing statues. They leave alone a room full of brown mold that lets off cold that half kills Drej when he investigates.

Rowan hears spider skittering ahead and they cautiously proceed to a web covered shaft. One fireball clears the webs from the immediate shaft entrance and after a fight with giant spiders that flood out (where they all take a little splash damage from their own spells and Rovert trips and falls before the onslaught) they approach the shaft again. Webs above and below mostly obscure their vision, but Rowan makes out a ledge 15 feet above to the right. He sends a mighty fireball up the shaft and it explodes near the top, burning out webs down to where they are. With the webs gone, another ledge is visible on the opposite wall 30 feet up.

Drej flies up and scouts the first ledge finding an empty grand hall. Rovert teleports them all up and they search that level, killing a few giant rats and taking statues and potions from alcoves. In the next ledge, Drej finds a heavy stone door. The ledge is large enough for all of them, so they teleport up again, but find they can’t get the door open between them. Rovert teleports them through into a fight with skeletons.

While a dead lord in the back heals the skeletons and itself, Rovert sends his wolf away to keep it from taking damage from the life bursts they’re using to fight the skeletons, but it’s attacked by a mummy emerging from the darkness! Rovert runs to help it with the mummy, but misses twice (he hits on a 7 or 90% of the time, but rolls two 6s on 3d6 to miss the mummy with both fire gouts, a 1% chance)! With a deathly wail it sucks over half the life from Rovert, bringing Rowan down and nearly Mark as well! Rovert withdraws, starting a teleport to get them all through the door again while Mark grabs Rowan and the pack in the wolf’s rib cage. The wolf falls holding the mummy at bay and they all get out of the tomb alive, Rovert taking a last chance to command the mummy to attack its own.

Rovert heals them all up enough to return safely to Citadel where they recover naturally for the next few days. They all level up.

I didn’t look ahead in my notes to see what kind of danger they were up for. Since we haven’t even considered this tomb for months, the power level of this particular mummy was a surprise even to me. I suspect they will return soon better prepared.
