On May 11th, Year 5, a few seasoned adventurers leave the Vale toward gnomish lands, anticipating a fight with a dragon for the first time since emptying the Kobold garrison near the Vale the first time. It takes them 3 days to reach Slighe Domhainn, where Dargos harbors them and tells them about the settlement that disappeared and Rovert being missing since reporting the dragon’s presence weeks before. He tells them where the village is, two days away.

On the 14th, they set out from Slighe Domhainn through settled gnomish lands. By the 15th, the settlements are becoming more sparse and with Verdis sensing a thunderstorm coming at 5 in the evening, and believing they are close, they make camp early. In the early hours of the morning the 16th, Conan is on watch and sees kobolds go to the river nearby for water. He wakes the others, but they don’t consider it urgent.
After breakfast, they all set out toward the bend the kobolds went around and are joined by Drej who communicates Rovert’s greeting. They approach the castle where the kobolds are apparently cooking and attempt to greet them in elvish. After a delay, the kobolds produce an elvish speaker who informs them they are not willing to negotiate with the gnomes. When it becomes clear that the dragon they worship is intent on dominating gnomish lands in the long run, and they let loose the first arrow at Verdis, the party attacks.
Aronis’s sling and Conan’s arrows struggle against the cover the wall provides while Verdis throws up Aronis’ grappling hook (finally putting to use something added to his sheet in character creation). It takes two tries, but Verdis gets the hook attached and starts to climb. With his sling ineffective, Aronis pulls a toad out of his hat and throws it up onto the parapets to distract anyone who might try to stop Verdis. This toad would later trip up a kobold monk who steps on it.
Soon, they all make it up onto the wall where Verdis’ onslaught is arrested by an armored kobold (the Tooth of Ovomoda) who fights defensively to hold Verdis off, each block with his shield having unusual impacts on the battlefield (I used the Shield of Wonder, and most of its effects were negative for the kobold, including impaling him and healing Verdis). One strike to shield blinds most of those on the parapets, blinding Aronis the longest. With Aronis in bad condition with two enemies attacking him and still blind, he casts himself off the parapets, casting a wind spell to break his fall. The fall nearly knocks him unconscious and he starts to roll to safety.
Meanwhile, with his fellow acolytes called to the roof for the battle, Rovert starts to cast a powerful spell to sweep the whole castle with death magic. With no one there to interfere with him, the 6.5 round casting time is no problem for him. He finishes shortly after Verdis makes an aggressive change, allowing him to slay the Tooth and Voice of Ovomoda. The other kobolds are all starting to flee and the spell sweeps them up, leaving only a couple to surrender who were further from the center.
Aronis is still rolling down below and the spell knocks him unconscious. Verdis quickly descends and heals him with lay on hands, avoiding fatigue. As they are gathering prisoners, they hear the roar of a dragon and see the brown dragon emerge over the hill behind the castle, swooping down on them.
This battle took far longer than intended (it was intended to be a series of small skirmishes for them to easily win, not a brawl on the rooftop as they drew in the whole garrison), so we will be holding our first special session on Thursday to fight the dragon, rather than try to get this exact set of players again on a future Saturday. We’ll see how they do. Aronis and Conan leveling up should help.
