Haven: Return to College

On March 2nd, Year 5, after a previous group of a Citadel House Adventurers limped back from an attempt to reach the ancient elven college, two of them recruit some mightier friends to return to the college:

  • Verdis (HuS): Level 10 Human Fighter
    • Phineas, Talking Rock
  • Rovert (TrS): Level 6 Human Magic-user (Death and Undead)
    • Drej, Level 4 Psuedodragon Familiar
    • Elf Eater Skeleton
    • Mutated Elf Eater Zombie
    • Zengiff, Talking Rock
  • Osiris (CoB): Level 6 Elf Magic-user (Life and Death)
  • Conan (MiM): Level 4 Elf Vampire Magic-user (Fire and Wind)
    • Scar, Level 3 Hawk Familiar

On Monday, the weather is nice and they make significant progress up river. During the night, Rovert’s wolves kill a passing bear on Osiris’ watch. In the morning, Tuesday, rain is starting, but not enough to slow them significantly. At the river, they destroy the stone that didn’t awaken on their previous visit before continuing. Near sunset, they arrive at the gates of the college, having observed many buildings from across the lake. As they pass through the gate, they see the nearest, beautiful building has lights in its magnificent front windows.

They decide to enter this building and find art and massive skeletons on display within. As they walk in, a voice greets them. It is a sphinx on the balcony above, asking if they are new students to the college. Osiris claims that they are and she asks for their proof of registration. Flustered, they get directions from her to the administration building where they can learn about registration.

On the way to the administration building (just about kitty corner from the library/museum) they encounter 32 zombies, which they easily cut down when they attack, finding that they were carrying empty buckets previously used to carry dirt. Hoping not to have drawn too much attention, they continue on to the administration building. The first door they come to they decide to search inside, finding some baubles and having an encounter with tar that tries to spread over Rovert. They decide to spend the night in the room.

During the last watch, Rovert’s, a wraith enters the room shortly before a few skeletons crash through the door. Rovert uses a Puppeteer Staff to keep the wraith ineffectually attacking skeletons until all of the skeletons are down, having done some damage to those who got close enough. While they turn their focus on the wraith (commanded to not resist), an explosion of death goes off in the room, dealing significant damage to all but Conan and Rovert’s undead wolves. While they continue fight the wraith, another explosion wounds them further. This time, Phineas hears a spell being cast in the hallway.

Finishing the wraith, Verdis moves into the hall, dodging a spell from an elf there. It runs. As they pursue, it vanishes and they chase beyond where they last saw it deeper into the building, leaving Osiris alone. In the hall, they encounter two more skeletons that they break down quickly.

Meanwhile, while Osiris packs their discarded equipment, the elf arrives in the room with him and attacks. Despite the elf breaking the lamp and filling the room with AoE spells, Osiris manages to miraculously evade some of the damage and cast enough healing on himself to survive until the others arrive, running toward his cries. The elf, actually a vampire, attempts to escape but is subdued.

Considering the captured vampire enough of a prize for this visit, they retreat in the twilight hours of the morning, the vampire on the skeletal wolf. Osiris, wounded near death and healed many times in the night, slows the group down and they don’t arrive in Citadel with the prisoner until Friday around noon.

Rovert uses a Puppeteer Staff to get the vampire to answer some of his questions, learning that he served a powerful lich. This prompts them to leave a marker on the map warning future adventurers to stay away from the college before throwing the vampire into the prison.

They achieved a lot more at the college than I was expecting, but this session achieved what it was meant to achieve: they got to have some intense battles and they became properly scared of the college. I still have some details to work out for it, but if today’s discussion is any indication, the danger there has convinced them to level a few more times before heading back.
