ToM Session 20: To the Crystal Fields

Having escaped the eerie hotel and spa, Sweetly Singular, the party finds a place to take a rest and with the help of meditation and sedatives, they get Lucy’s eager followers to sleep. They are then able to discuss what to do about their compromised companions. The party:

  • Doane Six (ByW): Level 7 Nekolyn Monk
  • Lamila (BiW): Level 7 Half-Orc, Half-Elf Fighter
    • Benquil: Level 2 Spider Monkey Animal Companion
  • Lucifer “Lucy” Underfoot (RiH): Level 7 Halfling Bard
    • Gelda Roughsole: Level 4 Halfling Thief Follower
    • Eymen Hunyadi: Level 3 Drow Padfoot Follower
    • Rav Lugulu: Level 3 Goblin Chemist Follower
    • Hilderek Ferlwinkle: Level 3 Gnome Tinker Follower
  • Alfred (JaH): Level 7 Human Thief

After some experiments with crystals that don’t succeed in restoring their companions’ minds, they continue toward where they believe the crystals to be. Eventually, Hilderic and Doane at the front see a deep purple light cross their path and Hilderic is eager to engage the stone one. Doane convinces him to go fetch the others and gives pursuit alone with an anti-magic encharge on his guns.

He creeps up behind the stone one and when well within easy range calls out. When the stone one turns, Doane gives it both barrels in the glowing stone near the top of its head. The stone goes dark and the stone one falls. By the time the others arrive, they find Doane perched atop it.

Lamila immediately uses magic to remove the crystal and “heal” it, restoring its glow. In the wake of their victory, Lucy’s followers begin to celebrate, eager to return to the hotel and enjoy some more pampering. At this point, Doane decides to take matters into his own hands and empowers a rock with anti-magic specifically aimed at shaking the magical influence on a mind. With a high Magical Intuition check, his intent prevails and he is able to restore Eymen’s memory of his name. With the test a success, he proceeds to do the same to the other three, having two failures, but becoming comfortable enough with the spell to get them out of their funk.

With the party back to normal behavior, they set about following the stone one’s path. Though its exact footfalls are unclear in the stone passages, the way it came and the way it was going are highly eroded by what must be centuries of stone one patrols. They easily follow it back a couple of days until they come upon a large chamber with many stone ones moving about within. The chamber is hundreds of feed tall and across, and at its center a pillar of light blue Myta crystal reaching floor to ceiling illuminates the whole chamber. Across the chamber, they can see that stone one activity, especially leaving and entering the cavern, is greater on the far side.

Lamila feels certain that the activity indicates that the stone ones are guarding something more than the three crystal deposits (Myta, Sagi, and Puid). She suspects it may be a way to the heart of magic they seek and they decide to try to make it through there after taking some of the crystals. To that end, Lamila drinks her remaining climbing potion from Gollant and scales to the wall, finding with a little surprise that she can climb on the ceiling as well. She soon makes her way to the pillar of crystal, where she starts to chip off pieces for Benquil to catch and bag. The sounds of her blows reverberates through the cavern in beautiful chords and soon all of the stone ones have gathered beneath her, throwing rocks that can’t reach her high perch.

With the guards well distracted and Lamila still producing beautiful, tempoless sounds, the rest of the party scurries across the chamber to one of the far tunnels and waits for Lamila to join them. Seeing that she isn’t going to easily shake the stone ones, they send Rav and Eymen down a different tunnel to plant explosives as a distraction. The explosions only draw away about half the stone ones and Lamila, crawling down the wall not far from their tunnel, finds no good place to descend. With no other recourse, Alfred and Doane spring into action, using darkness and anti-magic to disrupt, stun, and confuse the stone ones in order to help pull Lamila into the tunnel. With the confusion continuing outside, they flee down the new corridor, hoping for a place to escape pursuit.

The Tyranny of Mundanity campaign is coming toward what I intend to be the climax. Then I hope to wind it down, maybe before the end of the year, though holidays are likely to interfere.
