ToM Session 17: Searching the Mines

Having breached the gates of the gnomish mines and accessed the inner corridors, the helium seeking team begins searching the chambers around them. They are:

  • Doane Six (ByW): Level 6 Nekolyn Monk
  • Lamila (BiW): Level 6 Half-Orc, Half-Elf Fighter
    • Benquil: Level 2 Spider Monkey Animal Companion
  • Lucifer “Lucy” Underfoot (RiH): Level 6 Halfling Bard
    • Gelda Roughsole: Level 4 Halfling Thief Follower
    • Eymen Hunyadi: Level 2 Drow Padfoot Follower
    • Rav Lugulu: Level 2 Goblin Chemist Follower
    • Hilderek Ferlwinkle: Level 2 Gnome Tinker Follower
  • Alfred (JaH): Level 6 Human Thief

While they search, arrows dealing icey damage strike out at Doane and Lamila and soon they are engaged with the remainder of the occupants of the mine, several more of the icey spiders on a web of shimmering thread that throws off a cold aura and three more riding a massive slug. Lamila jumps down to engage the slug, being run over and trapped under it in dire straights until she struggles free. Meanwhile, Doane, Gelda, and Eymen attack at range, Doane emptying both his revolvers and Eymen throwing all of his knives before the battle is over. Lamila manages to squeeze out, cutting the slug down. The spiders use some ice and web magics, but the party mostly avoids them. During the battle, Alfred continues his dissections in the main hall.

With all of the enemy defeated, they search the remainder of the facility, finding a map that marks the location of the explosive gases. They go out to inspect the area and find the tunnel collapsed. They cut a small hole and start their air compressor separating the helium out with the help of cold flames from their arcandid powder. They determine that it will take a couple of days to extract the amount of helium they’re looking to get and assign shifts among all those capable of operating the machine. During the down time, they search the remainder of the rooms, finding documents that recount the existence of magical crystals the gnomes here hope to trade for and of “God’s Blood” that they hope to reach in order to mine it near the “Heart of Magic”. They also find a number of unusual devices using some of these crystals, an instrument made from them, and pots of oil that cause one hallucinations and the other euphoria (discoveries that cause them no small amount of distress until Alfred is able to drug them all). They also find a great deal of mithril ore, a mithril sword with a strange energy still in the forge, and some powdered crystal beside the same forge.

With all of these treasures, they modify one of the old gnomish mine carts to take with them on their return, filling it with all of the loot that won’t fit in the wagon they borrowed from Ilgrind. With all of the helium gathered, they prepare to depart, debating whether to return straight away to Ilgrind or to go down to investigate the “God’s Blood” they have read about.

The Tyranny of Mundanity campaign is starting to heat up, with the party having found a real ancient source that seems to speak of the womb of magic that Hilbrent says is growing with positive feedback. I suspect they will want to look into it as soon as possible.
