ToM Session 16: At the Gates

The magic ban opposition team, after five days traversing the tunnels under the gnome mountains, approaches what their directions indicate is the abandoned Gnomish mine. They are:

  • Doane Six (ByW): Level 6 Nekolyn Monk
  • Lamila (BiW): Level 6 Half-Orc, Half-Elf Fighter
    • Benquil: Level 2 Spider Monkey Animal Companion
  • Lucifer “Lucy” Underfoot (RiH): Level 6 Halfling Bard
    • Gelda Roughsole: Level 4 Halfling Thief Follower
    • Eymen Hunyadi: Level 2 Drow Padfoot Follower
    • Rav Lugulu: Level 2 Goblin Chemist Follower
    • Hilderek Ferlwinkle: Level 2 Gnome Tinker Follower
  • Alfred (JaH): Level 6 Human Thief

As they draw near, their lantern light reveals arrow slits above and beside the tunnel and then a heavy door with a portcullis. As they creep toward the door, arrows strike out at the party from the sides and above. In the ensuing chaos, Lamila rips the portcullis from its mooring and hurls it aside. While Doane helps ram against the door, Alfred searches for a hidden access and Lucy and his cohort withdraw a ways. Lamila hacks at the door with her axe, each strike accompanied by flashes of lightning.

Soon, there is a hole large enough to wedge one of Rav’s bombs in and Eymen delivers it, everyone retreating while the fuse burns. It explodes, demolishing the heavy wooden door. Lamila, Doane, and Alfred rush in, finding a second door in the cloud of dust. More arrows strike Lamila and glistening, cold webs start to form behind her and Alfred as they push against the door. Doane casts a spell that negates the magic of the webbing and helps with the door. With the arrow fire ended, they finally break through the door and find the gatehouse empty.

Opposite the gate they came through, a larger, sturdy wooden door stands across a pit into darkness with fallen trap doors hanging from it. While Doane magically creates a stone bridge to the door, Alfred and Lucy search the upper room of the gatehouse for hidden doors, finding none. While Doane attempts to cut through the thick door, Alfred descends into the pit, finding a hidden door there that leads to a ladder apparently beyond the door. With Doane’s attempts to cut finding solid stone on the far side of the door, they all descend to take the ladder in.

Alfred climbs first, listening until there are fewer steps in the area, then bursts out with Lamila and Doane. They see two spider creatures in the immediate area but as Doane’s shots ring out, more rush into the hall. While Lamila and Alfred end up engaged at melee, they manage to drop most of the enemy without much danger. The last flees through a door and Doane and Alfred follow, Doane shooting it through the next door. They confirm it dead and return to the others in the large hall.

The Tyranny of Mundanity campaign will continue with some critical information coming soon. This gatehouse encounter is something I’ve looked forward to for a long time, and with the mine captured they can really start to get to work.
