ToM Session 14: Back to the Workshop

We left our adventurers, recently banished from the merfolk city, swimming toward the surface but cut off from it by giant jellyfish. They are:

  • Doane Six (ByW): Level 5 Nekolyn Monk
  • Lamila (BiW): Level 5 Half-Orc, Half-Elf Fighter
    • Benquil: Level 2 Spider Monkey Animal Companion
  • Lucifer “Lucy” Underfoot (RiH): Level 5 Halfling Bard
    • Gelda Roughsole: Level 3 Halfling Thief Follower
    • Eymen Hunyadi: Level 2 Drow Padfoot Follower
    • Rav Lugulu: Level 2 Goblin Chemist Follower
    • Hilderek Ferlwinkle: Level 2 Gnome Tinker Follower

Since there are three jellyfish, Lucy proposes that they split into 4 groups so that at least one group can get above the jellyfish and safely attack them (and hopefully not Rav and Hilderick). I guess I wanted the plan succeed, or maybe I just reasoned that the jellyfish would certainly follow the two slower groups (Rav/Hilderick and Lucy/Gelda), but I rolled to see if the third followed Doane or Lamila.

It pursues Doane and Eymen, allowing Lamila to slip above them and start attacking. While she dispatches the Rav/Hilderick jelly (aided by Lucy’s battle song), Doane attempts to affix stone weights to his jelly’s tendrils but misses, sending stones plummeting into the darkness. That failed, he and Eymen swim hard to get a lead on the jellyfish and start to ascend managing to get atop it narrowly. While Doane kills that jelly, Lucy and Gelda lead the other back toward Lamila, Rav, and Hilderick, who kill it as well.

They are starting to see light ahead and they ascend rapidly, soon surfacing in stormy waters. Treading water, they see no sign of land, but they were told the closest land was North from the city. Doane’s bond with nature allows him to get a vague idea of North and they go that way, swimming a little way below the water to avoid the violent waves. They eventually find themselves passing through a reef. An entrancing and life draining force slows them a little while, but Lamila, Rav, and Doane manage to pull them through before too much damage is done.

They reach the shore and, not sure exactly where they are, they strike out through the rocky wilderness straight North. It takes them 10 days to reach a familiar road about 70 or 80 miles to the North, despite mostly fair weather. Following the road, but avoiding Calrendink proper as they turn North to make their way to Ilgren’s workshop.

They arrive to find that Alfred, a human member of their illicit group in Gollant (he had been the second story man for his team) who they parted ways with after their release in Vardorborg, has been there for several days helping Ilgrind with research. He came looking for them and while when his own efforts proved futile and he realized he needed a larger team. While they were gone, Ilgrind put Alfred to work despite not trusting him, during which time Alfred developed explosive arrowheads to Lamila’s specifications and produced three explosive crossbow bolts for himself. They learn that Ilgrind completed his research on a harpoon gun (which they no longer intend to trade to the merfolk) some time ago and has almost produced repeatable results with Doane’s requested hollow-point rounds.

They quickly get Alfred caught up, even convincing Hilbrent to manifest himself and answer some questions. With Hilbrent’s motivations well understood (he believes that magic use is a vicious cycle, in that the use of magic makes magic more prevalent and easy to use), they agree that they are willing to risk run-away magic in exchange for freedom and the return of magics like resurrection to the world. While they still believe they need evidence that the world will remain livable, they also consider the popularity of their movement vital to convincing Hilbrent (who again assured them that the pantheon would respect the people’s wishes). To the end of gathering popularity (and because it is his condition for continuing to provide his expertise), they decide to help Ilgrind complete his airship by going down to harvest lighter-than-air gas. Before that effort, they spend a couple of weeks with Hilderick, Rav, and Alfred aiding Ilgrind in his research, during which time they design and build an air compressor, produce the arcandid powder needed to run it, produce 12 hollow-point rounds, and design and build a silencer for Doane’s revolvers.

Next, they will be descending to access an ancient gnomish mine and use gnomish techniques from records Ilgrind acquired to refine lighter-than-air gas from the explosive gas found there.

We added a new player to the Tyranny of Mundanity group. JaH will be playing Alfred, a thief with a medical background and a love of poisons. I’m looking forward to having a fourth character.
