Character Thursday-Generic Scout Progression

This is our third generic NPC build progression, and I’m still trying to get the hang of it. I’m going to try an approach completely different from my generic knight and gnome policeman builds. I’m going to use my population generator to get attribute ranges based on the mean and standard deviation of attributes for members of the population who gravitate to soldier or fighter classes. I assume a population of average talent, no heroes here.

Level 1/Initiation

Class: Fighter or Soldier Race: Human

Random 3d6 with selection for high strength and constitution:

10-14 STR, 10-14 CON, 10-13 DEX, 8-11 WIS, 9-11 INT, 8-11 CHA

Skills: Weapon Skill I (if qualifying as a Fighter), Riding I (Human)

Abilities: Charge I (Human), Fast Mount/Dismount I (backstory)

Level 2 to 4

If not yet qualified to be a Fighter:

+4 Strength, Constitution, or Dexterity as dictated by need in that order. (Maximum 14, 14, 12, at which point, 1 point and the Master Weaver point are used to become a Fighter, gaining +1 Weapon Skill. Surplus are applied to Riding, then Constitution).

+1 Riding (unless fighter qualifications reached)

If already a fighter

+1 Constitution, +1 Charge, +1 Fast Mount/Dismount (max 3, Attack on the Run substitutes after 3), +1 Riding, +1 Perception

Level 5 and up

By this point, the scout is guaranteed to be a Fighter. His attributes, abilities, and skills can be determined by level, depending on how close he began to being a fighter.

Fighter at level 1

14 STR, 13 + LEVEL CON, 12-13 DEX, 8-11 WIS, 9-11 INT, 8-11 CHA

Charge LEVEL, Fast Mount/Dismount III, Attack on the Run LEVEL-3, Riding LEVEL, Perception LEVEL-1, Weapon Skill I.

Fighter at level 2 (1-3 points deficient)

14 STR, 12 + LEVEL CON, 12-13 DEX, 8-11 WIS, 9-11 INT, 8-11 CHA

Charge LEVEL-1, Fast Mount/Dismount III, Attack on the Run LEVEL-4, Riding LEVEL-1, Perception LEVEL-2, Weapon Skill I.

If < 3 deficient +1 Riding, if <2 deficient +1 Constitution.

Fighter at level 3 (4-7 points deficient)

14 STR, 11 + LEVEL CON, 12-13 DEX, 8-11 WIS, 9-11 INT, 8-11 CHA

Charge LEVEL-2, Fast Mount/Dismount III, Attack on the Run LEVEL-5, Riding LEVEL-2, Perception LEVEL-3, Weapon Skill I.

If <7 deficient +1 Riding, if <6 deficient +1 Constitution. (If 4 deficient, then level 3 was a normal level and only 2 points were obtained beyond the change in class.)

Fighter at level 4 (8-10 points deficient)

14 STR, 10 + LEVEL CON, 12 DEX, 8-11 WIS, 9-11 INT, 8-11 CHA

Charge LEVEL-3, Fast Mount/Dismount II, Attack on the Run LEVEL-5, Riding LEVEL-3, Perception LEVEL-4, Weapon Skill I.

If <11 deficient +1 Riding, if <10 deficient +1 Constitution. (If 8 deficient, then level 4 was a normal level and only 2 points were obtained beyond the change in class.)

On paper, this template looks a little over-complicated, but it is certainly more realistic, with a less homogeneous force of scouts than we saw for the gnome police. In the end, this almost as easy to program as the simpler one, and on the whole I think it is worth the effort to gain the variety.
