First tier magic purists. Their only abilities are associated with spell casting and they are the most naturally skilled with the art of magic. The second tier classes the magic-user is gateway to are specialized mage classes, drawing upon certain spell types with greater skill and frequency. However, the magic-user itself is a powerful class in his own right with general skill in casting.
Magic-users come in all varieties. They can have a deep understanding of one field of components, or a broad collection of components on which to draw. They can chose to specialize in anything from the very specific, such as teleportation, to the very general, such as fire magic. The source of their learning will also be varied, whether by instinct or instruction, study or experimentation. Whether mages come from academic background, military units, natural talent, or tribal ritual, they have a number of options when it comes to schools of magic and their attitude toward spell casting.
