Saturday Spell-Know Locale

There’s a lot of mileage you can get out of the detection syllable, “liu”.  It’s a great addition to trap spells like Fire Trap and Mud Pit, allowing them to be triggered by a specific event rather than merely jarring force.  The syllable also gets a lot of latitude in spells like Detect Phylactery and Know Alignment where it can be used to enhance the character’s ability to perceive various conditions.

Today’s spell suggests another use for it, effectively detecting earth and rock in the character’s vicinity to give him an idea of the lay of the land nearby.  This can be useful sneaking through a ruined city or navigating deep tunnels.

Like most detection spells, the power is applied to a faux perception check with special properties.  In this case we get a 16d6 instantaneous check (which is a lot compared to the 3d6+bonus a character normally gets) to perceive “earth or not” with a certain penetration.  At an average of 56, this would allow the user to “see” through a few walls, floors and ceilings for a couple seconds, but only for purposes of detecting other floors, walls, and ceilings.

The spell cost is 84 SP. It has a casting time of 9.33 seconds for a right-handed mage with no Agility and 15 Dexterity and 16 seconds for a similar left-handed mage.  The casting time isn’t a problem, since this isn’t really a spell for time sensitive situations.  If a character is running from something and needs to know more about the area, he’d be better off with non-magical navigational abilities.

That said, a caster could easily come up with a shorter, faster spell that has a similar effect but with less range.  It might also be worth the fleeing caster’s time to cast this spell as an encharge, giving him short range perception of the area as he moves.
